Owned by W. Lloyd Garrison’s SON! SHIPPING Ledger BOSTON 1845 Writing CIVIL WAR. Owned George T. Garrison, William Lloyd’s Son! ABOLITIONThis is a truly remarkable find, never before recognized on the market! A CYPHER BOOK & LEDGER OWNED BY GEORGE T. GARRISON, SON OF FAMED ABOLITIONIST WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON AND VETERAN OF THE 55th MASS VOl COLORED REGIMENT IN THE CIVIL WAR! First Lt. George T. Garrison, son of the famous abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison and an officer with the 55th Massachusetts infantry regiment, an outfit of black volunteer soldiers. Lt. Garrison, a white officer leading a unit of black troops, fought in every battle “with an exemplary record “ and was said to have led the troops through the streets of captured Charleston, South Carolina, in February 1865 singing the popular Union ballad the “John Brown” song. Garrison enlisted in the Civil War over the protestations of his father, who argued that slavery should be ended through peaceful means. After heavy research it is found that these were genuinely owned by Mr. George T. Garrison. A few factors, first the comparison of the handwriting book. The handwriting book has George T. Garrison written on the cover, and again on the inside, as 8 pages are repeated with handwriting practice by George. The last page reads,”A Sample of Penmanship by George T . Garrison “. The handwriting book remains in great shape with minimal wear. Repeated numerous times, these examples as well as the cover signature are nearly identical to this one, found on the back of a capital photo of Garrison taken in uniform during the Civil War. The ledger is also a nice example of George’s handwriting and early schooling as a bookkeeper which he later became.
