    ====================================
    John Dooley served in the First Virginia Infantry,
    part of Kemper's Brigade, Pickett's Division, Army of Northern Virginia.
    His journal starts in June of 1862, when he enlists with the 1st VA.
    He writes of his life in camp and in battle,
    his active service with the Confederacy ending at the
    Battle of Gettysburg, when he was shot thru both legs at the
    "High Water Mark" of the battle, at Cemetery Ridge.
    He continued his journal throughout his capture,
    hospitalization, and eventual parole.  It concludes with
    Dooley marching home and realizing that the
    Confederate States of America has been defeated.
    One of the best pieces written about the 1st Virginia,
    Nevins says
    "The revealing and penetrating observations of
    August 1862 - July 1863, campaigning with the Army of Northern Virginia;
    the cultured Dooley was a member of the 1st Virginia."
    Had one other copy that I recently sold for .
    It was in better overall condition, but was also ex-lib.
    This one is discounted a bit with the cracked hinge paper.
