From the back cover
"The South commissioned 296 brigadier generals throughout the war.
No less than 73 were Virginians, a vivid testimony to the leadership availible
among the sons of the Old Dominion. Of these, 16 brigadiers gave their lives
in the great conflict. Unlike most contemporary generals of like rank, those of
Civil War vintage personally brought their troops into battle, leading by example.
Such heroic exposure was predestined to produce an uncommonly high percentage
of combat wounds, illness, and death, all a direct result of their inspiring leadership.
This narrative concentrates exclusively on those 16 Virginians who attained the grade
of brigadier in the Confederate service and made the ultimate sacrifice."
