For sale is an EXCEEDINGLY RARE
Civil War Union Soldiers Buried at Andersonville 1866 Book.
This piece of Civil War history was published by Clara Barton and the Tribune Association in 1866. There are supposedly fewer than 25 copies in private hands!!! It's 156 years old and such a rare item.
The text comprises the "Report of the expedition to Andersonville, Georgia, July, 1865, for the purpose of identifying the graves and enclosing the grounds of a cemetery created there during the occupation of that place as a prison for Union Soldiers in Rebel hands." Included is a history of the Andersonville Prison, its administration, and treatment of soldiers under its care.  The lists of soldiers is organized by State.
The book pages are 100% ALL ORIGINAL, it has eight preface pages, 74 state pages, and two advertising pages at the back. The book was likely originally soft bound like a booklet, and the hardcover was professionally added later.
The book contributors are Clara Barton and Dorence
Atwater 1845-1910.
In July 1863, during the
Civil War
, Atwater was captured by the Confederate Army,
and found himself among the first batch of prisoners at the notorious Andersonville
prisoner-of-war camp. He is notable for having created the Andersonville Death Register while imprisoned there, which recorded the identities of his fellow prisoners.
He secretly made a copy of his list of the dead and missing which later allowed him, in cooperation with Clara Barton
, to mark the graves of otherwise unknown soldiers.
The book would make a highlight piece for any collection.

Condition
The book shows typical wear for a 156 year old item. The text is excellent and clear. It does have expected discoloration, corner and edge wear, and a few real minor repairs. The pages have two light creases and are shown on all pages as it was likely folded there. The outer book shell is outstanding, likely bound much later than it was made. Please see all pictures to judge condition for yourself.
