This is a very good anthology of readings from and about the American Civil War. It is hard to believe that it was assembled as a "grammar school reader" as it is far superior to the readers and history texts put forth nowadays. The selected readings (and poems) are artfully selected to not only provide youthful readers with an understanding of what the war was like for its participants but to create interest by them in the history of the war. All human aspects of the war are covered: North and South, white and black, male and female, army, navy and civilian. Some of the selections are from notable participants or writers such as John Esten Cooke, U. S. Grant, Harriet Beecher Stowe, John D. Billings, Carleton McCarthy and Mary A. Livermore. Most illustrations are period sketches and supplement creation of interest.
Includes an Introduction for Teachers.

Wonderful condition! Cover shows light wear, mostly on the edges of the spine, head and foot, and sides of cover.
Interior looks very good. No marks, pages have yellowed. Appears to be very lightly handled, most likely never read.
Former owner's bookplate on inside cover.
This in itself is a part of the San Francisco Bay Area history -
Plate depicts a farmer plowing a field, and says " The Hawthorn" J.M. Allen.
The Hawthorne Estate in Portola Valley has a detailed history online, interesting to read.
This book belonged to my great, great grandfather, and as his children were taught at home by a governess, this was most likely purchased for their lessons.
