Annals of the Army of the Cumberland 1863 1st Editionby an Officer (John Fitch)
J B Lippincott Philadelphia
Book Owned by Capt Heber Thompson of the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry
Item Description
Here is a nice first edition book about the Civil War (Annals of the Army of the Cumberland) for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself!
Very nice 1st Edition of this Civil War book. The book is entitled, "Annals of the Army of the Cumberland
". Written by "An Officer". The book was published/printed by J B Lippincott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The book was actually issued in 1863 right in the middle of the Civil War. The book is a first edition.
These books were represented as being originally owned by a Captain Heber S. Thompson, whom was with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War by the party we acquired them from.
Thompson was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lovejoy Station in Georgia during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. We have acquired much of Captain Thompson's Civil War library that we will be selling separately in our online stores over the next few weeks. Those listings will be noted here when made available. Some of the Civil War books had a card in the book with Heber's name on it , others had the name penciled in it like this set.
Thompson actually wrote a book himself called "First Defenders" in 1910 which was about the unit he served in from April 1861 on. We have a couple of copies of that book which we will be making available to you separately on our store sites.
This set of books does not come to the market very often. It is one of only a few of the first edition versions that we could find online.
Very desirable copy of this classic Civil War book issuance.
The book has a tannish cloth hardcover.
The book has an illustration of General William Rosecrass and a monument before the title page.
The front and back covers are still securely attached to the rest of the book at the spine. All the pages are still there. Some minor rub to the covers at the edges. Heber Thompson made some pencil remarks in the book. Heber T was noted on page 435 and he wrote his full name in, also a line down page 434 in the column. Page has been dog eared over. Also did the same thing on pages 208-209 where Thompson's group was involved. Page 209 dog eared over. A sketch at the bottom of page 209 of the terrain and a bridge and then a rendering on one of the blank back pages as well, but no note as to what it pertains to. Also, pencil line drawn down side of pages 142 and 143, page
Some light browning of the pages. No foxing or brown spotting. Some minor soiling in places. The book's pages are all intact, no major tears, missing pages or repairs. No writing in the book that we can ascertain.
No musty, tobacco, or mildewy smell. A dusty smell to the book being 150 plus years old.
The book is 9-3/8" tall, by 6.25" across, by 2-5/16" wide. The book is 671 pages in length. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
